Ten players on one point

Ten players were locked on one point each after the opening round of the national Junior Chess championships qualifying tournament held at the Kei-Shars Sports Club Hadfield Street yesterday.

Some 21 players have entered the tournament which will result in the top seven players joining national junior chess champion Cecil Cox to contest the Closed National Junior Chess Championships sometime later this year. What can be considered an upset defeat came when Kana Khan defeated Ron Motilall in a key first round clash yesterday.

Motilall recently won the Royal Academy of Chess sponsored junior tournament with a sudden death playoff win over Rashad Hussain.

His brother Raan Motilall, however, defeated Sheriffa Ali while Hussain defeated Jason Barnwell to also secure a point.

Other winners yesterday were Ryan Mc Kay, who defeated Darryl Calistro; Carlos Patterson, who won from  Ganesh Persaud; Sham Khan, who beat Sue Hei Feng; Saeed Ali, who beat Aslam Hussein; Crystal Khan, who stopped Videsh Shameer and Khalid Gajraj who beat Rajendra Jettoo.

Shane Yussuff and Farad Baksh drew their game while Adam Ramnarayn drew a first round bye.

The competition continues this morning from 9.30am at the same venue
