Gold dealer murder suspects released

Three men who were held for the murders of gold dealers Ramdeo Deonarine and Jainarine Raghubar were released from police custody over the weekend.

This was confirmed by a senior police source last evening. Investigations into the murders, the source said, are still ongoing.

Deonarine and Raghubar were discovered with deep wounds to their throats and their hands and feet bound in the kitchen of a Second Avenue, Bartica building two Sundays ago. Two Barticians, one of whom was found with a large quantity of gold in his possession, and another man had been arrested following the discovery.

Commissioner of Police Henry Greene had reported on Tuesday that police had learnt from the owner of the Second Avenue building Rickey Ramnarine that his office on the ground floor was broken into and $1.2 million, 100 ounces of raw gold and two laptops were stolen. It was unclear whether anything was stolen from the two deceased, the commissioner had said, but it is suspected that the perpetrator(s) may have stolen a licensed firearm which belonged to Deonarine.

Several efforts have since been made to speak with Ramnarine for further details on what went missing from his Second Avenue building but the man has been unavailable.

Meanwhile, when contacted yesterday the relatives of both the deceased declined to comment.

“We are tired and we don’t want anything to do with the media right now,” Raghubar’s relatives stated late last night when contacted by telephone.
