Ministry expecting 1,000 cyclists at this year’s ‘Big Ride’

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport said plans are moving apace for the hosting of its second ‘Big Ride’ which falls under its ‘Fit for Life’ programme.

The ‘Big Ride’, is a massive cycling event which will start at the University of Guyana entrance and end at the Carifesta Sports Complex, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. “The five-stage event will encourage persons to keep healthy and fit by engrossing in various exercising activities,” it added.

Director of Sport Neil Kumar recently told GINA that over 1,000 persons with various bicycles are expected to participate. Government officials, staff from all the ministries and persons of all ages from across the country are expected to assemble at the starting point and pedal off together.

“Prizes will be given to the village, organisation and ministry to field the biggest contingent, as well as for the group with the best uniform and the youngest and oldest riders,” Kumar said. According to GINA the ministry is hoping to double its riders this year as 500 riders participated at its inaugural event.
