Two NA prisoners remanded for wounding fellow inmate

Two remand prisoners were further remanded to prison by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when they appeared before her at the New Amsterdam magistrate’s court last week on a charge of wounding a fellow inmate.

The men Andrey Carrington of Angoy’s Avenue and Hubert Bayes of Corentyne were both already on remand in the New Amsterdam prison charged with crimes. They are now accused of wounding fellow inmate Valim Smartt 26 of the Corentyne.

Prosecuting, inspector Satrohan Dayaram told the court that on Thursday, September 9 at about 12:30 hrs the VC was in a section of the remand prison when he was attacked by the two accused, who told him they would have to spill his blood today.

The men placed a towel over his head before beating him with pieces of wood and then stabbing him. He received injuries to his mouth, face and head.  Smartt was subsequently rescued and treated at the prison infirmary before being taken for further treatment at the New Amsterdam hospital.

The matter was reported and the men arrested and charged. In court they pleaded not guilty and will have to return to court on December 3.
