Buxton driver charged with Lusignan road fatality

– granted $300,000 bail

A Buxton resident was yesterday charged with last Friday’s traffic accident that claimed the life of a 21-year-old woman and was released on $300,000 bail following a court appearance.

Stabroek News understands that Rawley Fredericks, 45, of Middle Walk, Buxton appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

It is alleged that Fredericks drove his motor vehicle in a dangerous manner on the Lusignan Railway Embank-ment road, causing the death of Deokie Pooran.

According to reports Pooran, Malina Zaman, 27, and her son four-year-old Kishan Zaman were standing on the southern parapet when they were struck down by a truck, which was speeding west along the southern carriageway of the road.
Pooran was killed on the spot while the injured were rushed to the Georgetown Hospital.

According to eyewitness accounts, a car stopped for Pooran to cross the busy road, while the Zamans were nearby. Stabroek News was told that the speeding truck driven by Fredericks, which was heading in the direction of the city, struck Pooran and dragged her several feet onto a nearby bridge. The Zamans were hit in the process. The truck then slammed into the back of a car before coming to a halt.

The driver, witnesses had said, told persons at the scene that his brakes had failed and he tried to turn but collided with the pedestrians and the car.
