Over 30 new doctors trained in Cuba underwent further training in emergency obstetrics and gynaecology and orientation exercises over the past week, the Ministry of Health has said.
The sessions were facilitated by Dr Narine Singh, Director, Regional Health Services at the ministry and Dr Jose Diaz Rossello, Family Health Advisor at the Pan American Health Organization. The programme ended on Saturday with the distribution of certificates to the participants at a ceremony hosted at the Ocean View Hotel, a press release from the Government Information agency (GINA) said.
Minister in the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran said the ministry is a learning environment that fosters the continuous development of its most valuable resource—its human resource.
On completion of the necessary administrative processes, most of the doctors will be stationed at the Georgetown Public Hospital. However, about five will make their rounds at the Mahaicony Hospital which is currently staffed only with Cuban doctors. Ramsaran said this will re-establish a Guyanese presence at the facility.
Singh said this was the ninth in the series of training programmes aimed at providing more training for doctors. The workshop was sponsored by the United Nations Population Fund and the ministry’s Maternal and Child Welfare department.
