A 24-year-old man accused of breaking into a woman’s house and stealing a quantity of items was yesterday placed on $125,000 bail when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation is that on September 24 at Georgetown, Patrick Smith of 164 Curtis Street, Albouystown broke and entered the dwelling house of Cousilla Persaud and stole a quantity of household appliances valued $498,000.

The accused who is said to be a miner pleaded not guilty.
Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson who represented the accused told the court that his client had been dealt a sound beating at the hands of public-spirited persons who accused him of committing the offence. The lawyer added that the blows were so severe that his client suffered a broken hand in the process
.
Smith’s right hand was heavily bandaged when he appeared before the magistrate. Thompson then made an application that his client be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he has no antecedents, poses no risk of flight, has a fixed place of abode and has been cooperating with the police in their investigations.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford in giving the facts of the case said that on the day in question the accused was seen by residents breaking into the house of the virtual complainant who resides abroad.

Telford had no objection the defendant being granted bail but submitted that it be in a substantial sum.

Smith was later admitted to bail in the sum of $125,000. He was ordered to return to court on October 18 for statements.
