One hospitalised after brothers clash over land

A land dispute between four brothers turned physically violent on Sunday morning in Wakenaam leaving one hospitalised and three injured.

Kulraj Kampta is said to be nursing multiple injuries in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital after sustaining the worst during     the brawl, while his   brothers Dindial Kampta, Dharmendra Kumar Mankoo and Kapil Kampta were treated at the Bell Plaine Hospital and sent away.

According to reports reaching this newspaper, Kulraj and Dindial on Sunday around 8 am borrowed a combine with the intention of destroying 10 acres of rice in Sarah, Wakenaam which was due for harvesting in a few weeks.

A resident of Wakenaam told this newspaper yesterday that the disputed farm land was being addressed in the court. The four brothers all have the same father but different mothers.

Earlier this year, Kulraj, who resides in Trinidad, returned to Guyana along with his brother Dindial, who lives in Canada, following the passing of their father, to claim the land. Mankoo and Kapil Kampta, meanwhile, have been living on and working the land for years, the resident said.

On Sunday, matters escalated when Kulraj reportedly borrowed a nearby farmer’s tractor to destroy the field. However, the machined stalled and the four brothers ended up fighting each other with cutlasses and pitchforks, the resident related.

Nearby, farmers and passersby intervened and stopped the men. They were taken to the San Souci Police Station, before being released on station bail and then later treated at the Bell Plaine Hospital. Kulraj was transferred to the GPH.
