Rugby Sevens team arrive in England

The national rugby Sevens team is now in England after an intensive four-day training camp in Barbados where they also competed against a Barbados Rugby Union (BRU) select rugby Sevens team.

According to a release sent to Stabroek Sport, the team arrived in England last Friday. They will be hosted by Loughborough University and the BOOST (Building On Overlooked Sporting Talent) Coaching Academy for further team preparation, including participation in a high level rugby Sevens tournament.

The team will depart England on October 1 for New Delhi, India to represent Guyana in the rugby Sevens events at the Commonwealth Games on October 11 and 12.

While in Barbados the national Sevens team played three games against the BRU Sevens team and won them all with scores 40-0, 60-0 and 45-0.

Following the games, the BRU hosted the team and officials to a dinner at the sports club.

Joining the team in Barbados prior to their departure was Canada-based player Avery Corbin who travelled with the team from Barbados to London.

Meanwhile, Kevin McKenzie joined the team on Saturday in England.

The team began their training and competitive games against the Loughbourough University’s rugby Sevens team on Sunday evening at Loughborough.

The team will arrive in India in time for the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, which runs from October 3-14. There they will partake in further practice matches.

A practice match against Canada has already been arranged and another against the current International Rugby Board World Sevens Series Champions Samoa is also in the pipeline.
