Taxi driver granted bail over break and enter charge

A taxi driver accused of breaking into the home of a man and stealing a quantity of female pants and tools was on Thursday admitted to $40,000 bail when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation is that on September 27 at Georgetown, Carland Nurse broke and entered the home of Karran Deodat and stole a quantity of female pants and tools.

The defendant, who gave his address as Victoria Village East Coast Demerara and stated that he could not remember the exact lot number, pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford, in giving the facts of the case, said that on the day in question, Deodat secured his home and left to take his children to school.

When he left his premises, Telford said, Nurse, who is a known character, broke in and removed the articles mentioned in the charge. The prosecutor said the defendant was seen by a neighbour who raised an alarm, which led to his capture and subsequent arrest.

Nurse was granted bail and ordered to return to court on October 26 for statements.
