A 63-year-old woman survived an early morning fire that completely destroyed her two-storey wooden house but she is now homeless along with her five grandchildren who are her charges.

Eulene Williams, of Section 20 Friendship, East Coast Demerara had made herself some tea on her kerosene stove after returning from collecting her public assistance, her daughter Candia told Stabroek News. Williams told her daughter that she thought she had put out the stove.

Candia related that her mother, who has hearing difficulties was in her bedroom around 9 am yesterday after making her tea, when she “feel a heat and then she see smoke under she bed”.

Williams who was alone at the time the fire started did not have a chance to save anything in her house; a young man in the area helped her to escape the flames. According to Candia the fire was already out of control and nothing could be saved.

“Everything gone down! She’s a very poor she went to collect her public assistance which takes care of her and the children. Everything just gone,” Candia lamented.

The five grandchildren who live with Williams were said to be at an aunt’s house when the incident occurred. Williams, Candia explained, had been taking care of the children since their mother passed on some years ago.

According to Candia, by the time the fire service arrived the fire had already burnt down the house and died out on its own.
Candia now worries what will happen to her mother who has nothing except the clothes she was wearing when she escaped the fire. “Right now my mother needs help. Nobody knows where she will sleep tonight,” a worried Candia expressed.
