Penalty hands Reggae Boyz narrow win over Soca Warriors

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz completed their second straight win over Trinidad and Tobago, edging them 1-0 in a competitive affair at the National Stadium here Sunday night.

A 19th minute Dane Richards penalty was enough to secure the Theodore Whitmore-coached side the victory, to continue their sequence of success against the Soca Warriors.

The victory came against the backdrop of their 3-1 win in August over the Trinidadians, and further enhanced their claim as the number one side in Caribbean Football Union.

“The first half was better but the second half, after we made the substitutions, that is where we usually have the problems but it is a work in progress,” Whitmore said.

“We have the DCC (Digicel Caribbean Cup) coming up and these games are a preparation for that. Our attacking third of the field stood out.
“We gave up the midfield in the second half but that is a part of the game after you have to make a couple substitutions.”

The decisive moment in the game came when Marvin Morgan was adjudged to have been brought down by Daneil Cyrus in the 18th minute and Richards sent goalkeeper Jam Michael Williams.

Both teams then had the opportunity to add to their scorelines. Cornell Glen’s powerful header was denied by goalkeeper Richard McCallum in the 22nd minute following a Trent Noel corner while Morgan shot over soon afterward as Jamaica failed to double their lead.

T&T looked the more threatening of the two teams after the first half, forcing two corners which came to nothing.

Against the run of play, Jamaica thought they had doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when Dever Orgill slotted home but the goal was ruled out for offside.

In injury time, substitute Jamal Gay nearly stole honours for the visitors but his header was weak and was easily saved by McCallum.
