Rose Hall youth club honours top students and teachers at anniversary celebration

The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club in collaboration with Zara Apartments recently honoured outstanding Grade Six students, teachers and head teachers at the club’s 20th anniversary celebration.

The students and teachers were honoured under the club’s premier Zara Apart-ment Berbice Educational Awards Scheme and the Annual Tribute to Head Teachers Programme. The events were sponsored by George Subraj of Zara Apartments based in the USA and Indra Jagnarine of Tota’s Bakery and Restaurant based in Brooklyn, New York, a press release said.

Top Grade Six student Kessa Kendall led the honourees followed by Victoria Harry, Alisa Chaturi and Simon Bactowar along with Rose Hall Town top student Kerissa Lashley. Karen Bowling, who tutored Kendall, was honoured as Teacher of the Year.

The head teachers display the gifts bestowed upon them in recognition of their service to Berbice schools and students.

The head teachers who were honoured are Michelle Bagot of Ankerville Nursery, Sandra Whyte of Rose Hall Town Nursery, Rosaline Butcher of Port Mourant Primary, Vijay Bhyro of Rose Hall Primary, Jonita Henry of Belvedere Primary, Felton Fraser of Lower Corentyne Secondary School, Nirmala Hussain of Corentyne Com-prehensive High School, Colin Bynoe of Port Mourant Junior High School and Barbara Hamilton of JC Chandisingh Secondary School.

In giving a preview of both programmes Secretary/CEO of the Club Hilbert Foster said they were held under the club’s annual pro-education campaign which seeks to encourage children to stay in school and complete their education. Foster congratulated the awardees, describing them as positive role models for Berbice. He urged the students to continue to strive for excellence while assisting others to excel.

Guest Speaker Ms Bynoe, wife of GTU President Colin Bynoe spoke of the importance of education and challenged the students to set high standards and personal goals then work hard to achieve them. She praised the administrators who were recognised as role models and others in the education system and urged them to continue to give their best to students.

In response, Hussain said the head teachers were honoured to be recognised for their work which they render out of love for the profession. She expressed gratitude to the club and the sponsors for making the head teachers and students feels “very special” and she pledged that together the awardees would uphold the high standards they have set for themselves.
