-’09 Auditor General report
Auditor General (ag) Deodat Sharma yesterday presented the audited accounts of public spending for fiscal year 2009 to the Speaker of the National Assembly.
Sharma presented his sixth report as Auditor General yesterday afternoon and according to him work on the 2010 report has already commenced. He said that the Audit Office is aiming to submit the audited accounts for 2010 to the National Assembly by the statutory deadline of September 2011.
Stabroek News understands that several recurring subjects have been pointed out by the Auditor General in this most recent report, with abuse of the Contingency Fund as well as overpayment to contractors being key issues.
The abuse of the Contingency Fund has been a recurring feature of the annual reports.
In a release, it was noted that the Audit Office’s human resources have seen continuous improvement as the unit currently is staffed by some 153 staff, its full complement. In addition, the unit said it will strive to improve on its yearly reporting and will continue to ensure that its audits are of the highest quality and standard.
As regards training, the unit noted that in order to ensure that best practices are institutionalized and skills are transferred, the Audit Office continues to make professional development and training a priority.
This has seen selection and training of staff in various developmental areas in order to enhance the functions of the unit.
