Guyana is one of 240 countries and organisations participating in the Expo in Shanghai, China, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. Guyana’s participation is seen as a great opportunity to showcase its features on the world stage, even as it further strengthens bilateral ties with China.

Guyana’s booth incorporated the National Motto “One people, One Nation, One Destiny”. It features a tunnel showcasing the distinctive history of Guyana’s six races.

The booth was divided into three sections: The Amazon Adventure featuring Guyana’s rich biodiversity and landscapes; Better City, Better Life; featuring historical buildings and other hotspots in Georgetown; and Industries driving the economy such as agriculture, mining and fishing. It was designed by local designer John Fernandes under the guidance of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.

Replicas of Amerindian huts and canoes showcasing the lifestyle of the notion’s Indigenous Peoples were also displayed along with products of Guyana such as Indi Garam Masala and Curry Powder, Demerara Gold, and a variety of El Dorado rums.

Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy also got a lot of attention; particularly from environmentalists who gathered in front of a wall highlighting the initiative. According to GINA, many visitors commended Guyana’s booth. Visitors were also given an opportunity to win prizes such as bags, T-shirts, DVDS and lapel pins through question and answer segments. Guyana was also featured heavily on the popular China Central Television (CCTV) programme as well as in the Expo Daily Newspaper and the Shanghai Morning Post newspaper.

GINA said the Expo aimed at promoting the exchange of ideas and the development of the world economy, culture, science and technology but most importantly it served as a meeting ground for countries around the world to display their achievements and improve and foster better foreign relations.

The event started in May and will conclude on Sunday. An estimated 70 million people are expected to visit.
