Premier elected

Finance minister Paula Cox will be Bermuda’s next Premier.

She was elected Thursday night as the new leader of the governing Progressive Labour Party to replace Ewart Brown who has stepped down both as leader and Premier.

It was an easy victory for Cox who scored 124 votes to the 39 of her closest challenger Terry Lister.

The incoming premier, a lawyer, has been an MP for 14 years during which time she has held several cabinet positions, including deputy premier.

Cox promised to work to heal divisions in the party and to regenerate the economy.

Storm nears Bermuda

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Bermuda as Tropical Storm Shary approaches in the Atlantic.

The storm formed south of the British territory and is expected to pass near or east of Bermuda during Friday night. Wind and tropical storm conditions are expected by the afternoon.

Forecasters said it appeared that Shary, the 18th storm of the season, would be relatively short-lived.

Observing redrafting of electoral
boundaries

The redrawing of electoral boundaries is a sore point in some Caribbean countries.

So how do others do it?

Representatives from nine Caribbean nations have travelled to Ottawa to learn how Canada redraws its electoral maps every 10 years to account for population shifts and growth.

Among the nations represented are St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Kitts and Nevis, where boundaries have been the subject of court challenges over the past year.

A release from Elections Canada, the country’s electoral agency, says Canada’s model is appealing to other nations because of its independent nature.
