BBC Caribbean News in Brief

Relief work continues in St Vincent
Officials in St Vincent say normal life is returning following the damage caused by then Hurricane Tomas earlier this week.
The agriculture sector was worst hit, suffering losses estimated at about US$24 million.

The acting head of the National Emergency Management Organisation, Michelle Forbes, told BBC Caribbean that all roads were again passable.

Electricity and water supplies were almost all restored, she said.
More than 600 people are still in shelters, awaiting repairs to some of the 1,200 homes that were damaged.

Election case rejected

The High Court has thrown out a petition resulting from January’s general election in St Kitts and Nevis.
Lindsay Grant, the leader of the opposition Peoples Action Movement, had asked the court to void the election of his opponent, Glen Phillip of the governing Labour Party.

Grant had alleged that irregularities on polling day affected the result.
But Justice Indra Hariprashard-Charles struck out the petition, saying that there was no precise evidence under current laws to rule otherwise.

A lawyer for Phillip, Henry Browne said his client felt vindicated.
The judge also said her ruling was bound by last month’s appeal court ruling in an election petition case in Antigua and Barbuda.
