Five Guyanese seamen were on Saturday deported to Guyana after they were fined for conspiracy to traffic in electronics that had been stolen from a local yachtsman, the St Maarten Daily Herald has reported.
According to the report, Prosecutor Rienk Mud levied a “reasonable fine” on the crew of New Beginning, a cargo boat that delivered goods from Guyana to St. Maarten each week.
Coast Guard officers had found electronics and other items that had been stolen from another boat, on New Beginning last week Wednesday. The robbed vessel was docked at Bobby’s Marina.
“They had each to pay dearly for what they did [before being let go],” Mud told the newspaper on Sunday and the items were identified by the owner.
The SMN News had last week reported that police, Customs and the Coast Guard had arrested the Guyanese last week on suspicion that they had broken into at least three yachts that are anchored at the Bobby’s Marina.
According to management of Bobby’s Marina the three yachts that were broken into are the “You Can’t Believe It”, “Winsome” and “Lucy 1.” The items recovered on board the New Beginning included compasses, VHF radios, tools and marine electronic equipment.
