Parents shut Golden Grove Primary over conditions

Parents and students shut down the Golden Grove Primary School this morning protesting the lack of potable water and a subsequent decision to hold “double sessions”.

Holding placards, the parents said that for the past six weeks there was no running water at the school, leaving the bathrooms filthy. One cleaner reportedly broke out in hives and the parents were scared that their children would be affected. Classes were not in session at the East Coast Demerara school this morning.

According to one parent, they wrote the Ministry of Education about the situation and the only response they got was for the school to hold “double sessions”. This was four weeks ago. Since then nothing has been done and they decided to protest.

Parents, Teachers Association (PTA) head, Patricia Tixey told Stabroek News that they will continue to protest until they get a response. They plan to completely shut the school tomorrow, she said.
