Protest-hit Golden Grove Primary gets water pump

The Golden Grove Primary school has finally received a much needed water pump following two days of protest action by parents. But they will have to wait until today to know if the pump will work because the area experienced load-shedding yesterday afternoon.

Yesterday the head of the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) Patricia Tixey told Stabroek News that regional officials had brought a pump but it turned out that the pump was “too small and it gun burn out”.

The school had gone five weeks without water which resulted in double sessions at the school for nearly four weeks.
Lack of water has resulted in the toilets becoming dirty and students and teachers have to fetch water from a drain across the school if they want to use the toilet.

Tixey said that the official later returned however with a better pump and installed it but the community was experiencing power outages from one in the afternoon to about four o’clock so they will have to wait until today to test it.

Meanwhile, parents once again kept their children at home yesterday. Only teachers were present at school yesterday Stabroek News was told. It is expected that once the pump works, the students will be attending school again.

Regional Education Officer of Region Four, Baydewan Ghir Rambarran, indicated yesterday that whole day sessions are expected to resume at the school shortly once the pump is installed.
