Police called in after Mahaicony Rice Mills refuses access to accounts

The Manager of Mahaicony Rice Mills (MRM) Limited, Taramattie Ghanie was told to report to the Mahaicony police station this morning at 8.30 to assist in the process of making the accounts of the company available.

MRM has been deeply indebted to farmers and the Ministry of Agriculture has upped the pressure on it to begin paying the farmers.

The police were called in yesterday after the MRM accountant refused to hand over financial information which had been requested by the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB).

A GRDB release said yesterday financial information had been requested by the GRDB since September 1st and the company had asked for several deferrals. The information was requested under Section 10 (1) of the Rice Factories Act.

The GRDB said that on November 4th, MRM was informed that officers of the GRDB would be visiting the company for access to the accounts yesterday. When they turned up, the GRDB officers were denied access to the accounts. The police were then summoned and two employees of MRM were then escorted to the Mahaicony Police Station and Ghanie was invited to appear today.
