As a 60-year-old woman attempted to use a pedestrian crossing at Camp Road and Barrack Street yesterday morning she was hit by a vehicle which then fled the scene.
Grethel Lewis, of Mocha, East Bank Demerara was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) and has since been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Lewis, hospital sources said, remained in a critical condition up to last evening.
The hit and run during which Lewis was injured occurred some time before 11.25am. The woman, according to a GPHC release, was brought to the hospital’s accident and emergency unit at about 11.25am.
Reports reaching the hospital, according to the release, said that the woman was at the pedestrian crossing when she was hit by the vehicle.
When this newspaper visited the hospital’s ICU just after 4pm yesterday Lewis had just been moved there from theatre.
The woman’s head was heavily bandaged and she was yet to regain consciousness.
“Her relatives were here earlier to sign some paperwork before the surgery but we haven’t seen then again yet,” a hospital source told this newspaper.
“At this time her condition is critical because of the type of injuries she suffered.”
