Port Kaituma man was found in vehicle with ganja – court hears

A 46-year-old man accused of having a quantity of narcotics in his possession was on Thursday admitted to bail in the sum of $50,000 when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The allegation is that on November 8, Boyce Griffith of Fitzburg, Port Kaituma had in his possession six grammes of cannabis.

Griffith pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Police Sergeant Roneta Liverpool in giving the facts of the case told the court that on the day in question the police were conducting a patrol when they saw the accused in a parked vehicle acting in a suspicious manner.

He was approached by the lawmen, a search conducted and the illegal substance was found in a haversack he was carrying at the time. He was then told of the offence committed, arrested and charged.

Patrice Henry who represented the defendant told the court that at the time of the incident, his client was an occupant of the vehicle along with several other persons and argued that the cannabis could have been the property of any of the other persons.

Henry made an application that his client be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that his client had no antecedents, poses no risk of flight, has a fixed address and has been cooperating with the police in their investigations.

The prosecution had no objection to the defendant being granted his pretrial liberty.
Griffith was placed on $50,000 bail. His matter was transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrates’ Court for February 2.
