CARICOM gets EU $$ for renewable energy project

The CARICOM Secretariat and the European Union earlier this month inked a Contribution Agreement which will facilitate  the implementation of the Caribbean Renewable Energy Capacity Support (CRECS) project over a 14-month period with grant funds of EURO 1,350,000.

The recent grant funding from the European Union will boost efforts to increase the deployment of renewable energy at national levels within CARIFORUM (CARICOM’s 14 Member States and the Dominican Republic) through the creation of enabling policy, regulatory and legislative frameworks, the CARICOM Secretariat at Turkeyen stated in a release last week.

The CRECS project involves a menu of activities and outputs aimed at addressing the identified barriers to the use of renewable energy and increasing renewable energy investments in the 16 CARIFORUM countries.

According to the release, some of the key activities that will be undertaken include drafting model legislation governing electricity and energy supply with renewable energy focus;  assisting member states in formulating or amending national electricity and energy supply laws using the model legislation as a guide; and implementing renewable energy modules in relevant Masters’ Programmes in regional universities and tertiary institutions.
