ODI series to go ahead as planned

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The first One-Day International between West Indies and Sri Lanka will go ahead today after all, ending a day of confusion over whether the match would be played, a West Indies cricket spokesman confirmed late yesterday.

The West Indies Cricket Board’s corporate communications officer, Imran Khan, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that the first game would be played at the Suriyawewa Stadium in the southern town of Hambantota, as scheduled.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board had earlier issued a statement proposing postponement of the series until January/February, owing to persistent heavy rains that wrecked the Test series. The poor weather has ruined the build-up to the series opener with neither West Indies nor Sri Lanka being able to practice outdoors.

Rains allowed just 103 overs and one innings in the final Test of the three-match series in Kandy last week, after also affecting the two previous matches.

The first match is scheduled to get started at 9:30 am (5:00 am Eastern Caribbean time) today.
