Berbice trio remanded over robbery of NY-based family

Three men who were charged with nine counts of armed robbery were remanded to prison when they appeared before Magistrate Krishndat Persaud at the Springlands Court yesterday. Quammy Bhagwandin, 28, of Patrick Dam, Angoy’s Avenue in New Amsterdam, Roy McAndrew, 30, of Dukestown, Corriverton, a minibus driver/tractor operator at Skeldon Estate and Simon Vanderstoop, 23, of Kiltern, Corentyne were not required to plead to the indictable offences.

The court heard that on December 7 they barged into the home of Mohindra Shewbarran at No. 0 Village where three New York-based relatives were staying and robbed them of US$6,500, a quantity of gold jewellery and a laptop computer. Reports are that Christopher Shewbarran, his wife Ahilya, 45 and a cousin Vadawattie and the occupants of the home were in the living room when the accused, who were armed with a gun and two knives, robbed them of the articles. Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant told the court that ranks from the No. 51 Police Station responded quickly to the report. Based on investigations a minibus, BHH 776 was stopped and searched at No. 43 Village and the defendants were arrested. He said too that the some of the stolen jewellery, the laptop computer and documents belonging to Shewbaran were recovered.  The unrepresented trio was remanded to court until December 29. The matter has been transferred to the No. 51 Court.
