Board for T&T crime victims soon

(Trinidad Express) Justice Minister Herbert Volney on Tuesday expressed optimism that a board will soon be appointed to deal with compensating victims of crime.

In a brief telephone interview, Volney said a list of names is currently before Cabinet and though it will be premature to divulge the names, he can guarantee the matter is engaging the attention of Cabinet.

“I read the Express article and then started the process of enquiring as to how far it (the process) had gone,” Volney said.  A media release issued by the Communications Unit of the Justice Ministry on Tuesday stated that Volney “empathises with the situation of English couple, Peter and Murium Green and commits to assisting them as far as the governing Acts and Laws under which the Ministry of Justice operates”.

The Greens were attacked in Tobago on August 1, 2009, and on Boxing Day went public in an interview with the Daily Mail in London about the ordeal they suffered, levelling a barrage of criticism against medical institutions and broken promises from the Tobago House of Assembly.

The release added: “The Criminal Injuries Compen-sation Unit (CICU) of the Ministry of Justice received a formal application on July 11, 2010, from the Greens and, in the months since, has conducted its own investigations and reviews into the couple’s tragic incident.
