Woman put on peace bond after damaging ‘Joey’ Jagan’s bike

A 29-year-old woman yesterday initially pleaded not guilty to maliciously damaging the trafficator of a motorcycle belonging to Dr Cheddi Jagan Jr but she subsequently admitted her guilt.

It is alleged that on January 29 at Charlotte Street, Georgetown, Monneque Haynes maliciously damaged one motorcycle trafficator valued $15,000, property of Dr Jagan.

Haynes of 64 Bel Air Village told Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson that she and her friends would usually go out late and stop at Dr Jagan and ask for “passage” to go home. Haynes said that on the night in question, when they went to ask for money one of her friends saw him point a gun and they all ran.

Haynes told the magistrate that she does not know if someone hit the light off the motorcycle while running away but she assured the magistrate that she did not have it in her bag.

However Jagan told the magistrate that Haynes harasses him and his family and on the night in question, she rang his door bell at 8.15 pm.  He said that she was demanding $500 and he asked her to leave but she continued to ring his bell.

Jagan said he then heard the children shouting that she was breaking off the light.

He said when he got outside she was heading up the road. A taxi driver apprehended her and took the light away from her. The police were called in, he said, and she was arrested.

However, Jagan told the court he did not want her to go to jail for the light. He said that he would fix the trafficator on his motorcycle himself but he asked the magistrate to restrict Haynes from his property.

Haynes who wanted the matter to end apologised to Jagan for the inconvenience she had caused him and told the magistrate that she will stay away from him.

In tears Haynes changed her plea to guilty and the magistrate placed her on a bond to keep the peace for two years.
