Man on wife abuse charges faints in court

Godfrey Lammy pleaded not guilty to unlawfully assaulting Alana James on February 26 at Albouystown. He also pleaded not guilty to making use of threatening behaviour towards James who was not in court.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question Lammy, who was armed with a knife, told the virtual complainant (VC) that he would kill her. After an argument between the two, the defendant then kicked the VC into a trench, jumped in behind her and fired several stabs.

Telford said further that the defendant subsequently dragged the VC out of the trench and with the knife to her throat, ordered her to take off her clothes and bathe naked in the trench, which was in an open area, in front of a crowd.

When Telford got to this point in his narration of the facts, the defendant fainted. However, he soon recovered.

Telford then applied for bail to be refused on the grounds of the increase in cases of domestic abuse in the country and the Caribbean, citing the recent case where a man was given five years imprisonment for abusing his spouse in the Caribbean.

When Magistrate Robertson refused bail for Lammy and set his matter to be heard today, he fainted again.

He was then taken out of the court and the magistrate called for a ten-minute recess to ensure that the man was okay.

Meanwhile, the magistrate also ordered that the VC be present at today’s hearing.
