Mechanic charged with spare parts fraud

Montage was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 for each of the three counts and $75,000 for the fourth count, after pleading not guilty.

The charges state that on four occasions Montage, 41, of 283 West Ruimveldt, was entrusted with monies by Godfrey Bovell in order to affect repairs to a motor vehicle. However, it is alleged he fraudulently converted the sums to his own use and benefit.

The charges allege that on March 18 at Georgetown, Montage was entrusted with $122,000; on February 9, he was given $278,000; on January 7, he received $50,000 and on December 18, 2009 he received $100,000.

Attorney Patrice Henry, in his bail application, told the court that prior to the allegations, his client had an unblemished record. He added that Montage was contracted by Bovell to repair his motor vehicle and was required to produce receipts for monies received. He asked for reasonable bail to be granted.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford asked for bail to be refused since Montage could be a flight risk due to the matter now being before the court and the sentence it carries. The continuous repetition of the offence was the second reason offered by Telford. Telford said that Montage was working for Bovell and when he was asked to submit receipts for parts allegedly purchased, he could not produce any receipt. Henry said that defendant gave the receipts to a clerk who works for Bovell.  However, the clerk denied being in possession of any receipts from the accused.

The matter was put down for March 29 in Court three.
