A man who allegedly snatched a motorist’s chain while he was waiting for the traffic light to change was remanded to prison yesterday.
Ryan Brown pleaded not guilty to stealing one gold chain valued $350,000 from Nandalall Awad on May 28.
Brown, 22, of Broad Street said the police “making up charges against me.” He told the court that he was sleeping on Camp Street when he saw a man run by. He then ran after the man “to see what happening.” He added that because of his actions, the police thought he was the perpetrator of the crime. He pleaded for leniency saying his mother was likely to become ill if he was incarcerated.
However, Awad said that he was in his car at the junction of Camp and Regent streets waiting for the traffic lights to change when Brown snatched his chain. He said he pursued the man in his car but was unable to get far due to the traffic.
He said that the chase was undertaken by a public-spirited citizen who managed to apprehend Brown.
The prosecutor asked for bail to be refused since the accused was before the court on a matter of a similar nature recently.
Brown was refused bail and the matter transferred to Court Two for June 8.
