Farmer remanded over Yarrowkabra thefts

A 38-year-old man was on Friday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to two counts of break and enter.

Sunil Dindiyal

It is alleged that on September 1 at Yarrowkabra, Sunil Dindiyal of 114 De Willem, West Coast Demerara broke and entered the shop of Alexander Singh and attempted to commit a felony therein.

Allegedly also, on August 31 at Yarrowkabra, Dindiyal is accused of breaking into the dwelling house of Ava Charles and stealing items valued $45,876.

The farmer pleaded not guilty to the charges of break and enter and larceny when they were read to him by the Acting Chief Magistrate.

The defendant in his response to the charges told the court that while at a creek under the influence of alcohol he was approached by Singh who began beating and accusing him of having knowledge of the break in at his house.

When given a chance to respond however, Singh related to the court that he caught the defendant in his shop.

The prosecutor in his address to the court said that the police had investigated a series of burglaries in the area for which the defendant was charged including breaking into the home of Charles. The prosecution then objected to the accused being admitted to bail.

The unrepresented Dindiyal was later remanded to prison. His matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for September 22.
