Bandits raid Enmore lumber yard

Armed bandits yesterday struck at an Enmore, East Coast Demerara lumber yard and after locking five persons in a bond escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police last evening had a suspect in custody.

Police officials said that around 14:45 hours two bandits, one of whom was armed with a gun, walked into the North Enmore business owned by Naresh and Christine Pooran, pretending to be customers.

The men held, a worker, three customers and Christine who were in the business establishment at the time at gunpoint. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the business while gold rings, cell phones and a small quantity of cash were taken from the victims.

The victims who were then locked in a bond managed to escape through an inside door after the bandits fled.
This is not the first time that the Poorans have been robbed. Last month, Naresh was shot in his abdomen during a robbery at his Enmore home.
Police had said in a press release that the businessman and his wife Christine were in the lower flat of their home when three men, one armed with a handgun, entered through an open door. The men then held up the couple and some time during the incident Pooran was shot.

The perpetrators, police had said, then took away an undisclosed sum of cash and escaped in Naresh’s motor vehicle PMM 4412. The vehicle was later found abandoned along the railway embankment at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara.

The family had declined to speak about the incident but this newspaper was reliable informed that the bandits got approximately $4 million in cash, jewellery and other valuables.
