A 21-year-old man yesterday attempted to take his life by ingesting poison shortly before he was to appear in court on a rape charge.
Police said in a press release that around 11:10 hrs Melroy Barry of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, reported to the police at Cove and John Police Station and informed them that he had drunk a poisonous liquid.
A vial was found in his possession and he has been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The release explained that Barry was on bail in a matter of rape which was under investigation by the police and was reporting to the police station as required as the matter progressed.
On the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Barry was to be charged with the offence and placed before the court yesterday, the release added.
