Mayor’s Cup set to kick off on Sunday

With just a few days remaining before the kick off of the annual Mayor’s Cup Knockout Competition it is a sure bet that the 16 teams that will be fighting for the crown are getting themselves in gear.

Defending champions, Pele FC, will be looking to retain their title and cart off the top prize of $500,000 once again while football giants, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United, who was the runner-up last year will certainly be a force to reckon with as they look to regain the title.

Guyana Defence Force (GDF) claimed the third place last year when they defeated Sunburst Camptown in the match prior to the final showdown.

Apart from the top prize of half a million dollars, the second place finishers will receive $200,000, third – $100,000 and the fourth place finishers will receive $50,000.

The teams taking part in the tourney are Fruta Conquerors, New Amsterdam United, Sunburst Camptown, Bakewell Buxton Stars, Riddim Squad, Grove Hi Tec, Pele, Seawall Fc, GDF, BV Triumph, Alpha United, Victoria Kings, Santos, Uitvlugt, Western Tigers and Den Amstel. Individual prizes such as the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Highest Goal Scorer and Best Goalkeeper are also up for grabs.

The opening night has N/A United clashing with Fruta Conquerors in the curtain raiser of the double header that has Sunburst Camptown meeting Bakewell Buxton Stars in the feature battle.

All matches will be played at the Georgetown Football Club Georgetown during the eight nights of competition.
