Gafoor carts off Independence Day Scrabble tourney

Gafoor, was the only player to accumulate five wins in the 17-player, six round tournament which he ended with a positive spread of 561.

He was defeated by Floyd Carmichael in a fifth round encounter after racking up four consecutive victories.

But his win over Maurice Munroe in the third round which gained him a spread of 383 meant that Gafoor already had the tournament “locked,” as he led by 463 points at the end of the round.

Preceding wins against Grace Hercules (25) and Colin Chichester (55) aided Gafoor.

In the final round, Gafoor defeated Orlando Michael gaining an additional 91 points.

Ulric Harris with four wins and a positive spread of 448 was second.

Harris scored wins over Rudolph Michael (48), Michael Benjamin (219) and Fred Collins (111) but lost to Gafoor and Orlando Michael.

Carmichael occupied third position with four wins and a positive spread of 387.

Though he started out with two consecutive wins against James Krakowsky (118) in the first round and Orlando Michael (91) in the second, Caribbean champion Frederick Collins faded to end in fourth place with four wins and a positive spread of 353.
