According to coordinator of the tournament Oneil Durant, the competition is now in its fifth year but this is the first time it will go indoors to be contested in the form of a five-a-side Futsal knockout tournament. Durant added that the organizers have chosen to go with the indoor format this year because of the large number of markets that would like to participate in the tournament this time.

“Because Futsal is a shorter, more dynamic and explosive form of the game we are more able to accommodate all the markets and other businesses that are interested in participating.” Organisers expect approximately 10 markets from as far as Parika and Ann’s Grove in the tournament with two teams being permitted to participated from each market. Additional teams from a number of barbershop’s and banks around Georgetown are also expected to participate in the tournament. Durant also thanked Director of Sports, Neil Kumar, and the National Sports Commission for making the facility available for the hosting of the tournament.

Mohamed has been an ardent sponsor of the tournament since its inception and he explained yesterday that one reason his business has been so financially  involved in the tournament is because he too started his business in the Stabroek Market 30 years ago.  “The market is responsible for my economic development,” he added.

Durant noted that fans can look out for an explosive tournament but the prize for the winning team has not yet been determined as the organizers are seeking more sponsorship.
