The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) will tonight hold a wake at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in Queenstown for the late veteran cricket administrator Alfred Mohammed.
Mohammed, who gave over 40 years of service to sports in Guyana, died on August 13 after a brief illness.
Mohammed served as Chairman of the Competitions Committee of both the GCA and the Demerara Cricket Boards.
He is the father of former national opening batsman Ricardo Mohammed who now resides in England.
The GCB has extended condolences to the family and friends of the late Mohamed.
Meanwhile a cricket board official yesterday described the late Mohammed as “very quiet, soft spoken and always very respectful to others.”
“He was dedicated to his work with cricket, “the official added.
And, the GCA, in a release after Mohammed’s death called the late administrator a tireless worker.
“The Executives and Members of the Georgetown Cricket Association offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Alfred Mohammed, who died on Friday 13th August, 2010, after a brief illness, “the release stated.
Mohammed, the release pointed out, was involved in the game of cricket in the Georgetown area for more than three decades playing initially for the Bookers Sports Club which was later renamed Guystac Trade 2 Sports Club.
“When his playing days were over he later distinguished himself by becoming a Cricket Administrator, culminating in him being elected Chairman of the Competitions Committee of the Georgetown Cricket Association,” the GCA release stated.
“Alfred Mohammed was a tireless worker, always trying to ensure that cricket competitions were started, played and completed as soon as it was convenient to those involved.
“Cricket Administration in Guyana will be poorer with the loss of Alfred Mohammed,” the release ended.
