Already leading after their performance in swimming and cycling, Bishops’ High School yesterday added a few more points through creditable results in the field events of the North Georgetown Zone One Inter-Zone Championships at the Guyana Teachers Union ground, Woolford Avenue.
Their lead is based on the output from athletes such as Leticha Greaves, national table tennis starlet Chelsea Edghill, Onica Roses, and Olivia Weeks. And running concurrently alongside the field events of Zone Two, Queen’s College also had a fruitful day off the performances of Walter Roberts, Larrissa Wiltshire and Jad Atkinson. Contributing in the girls’ under-20 category, Greaves earned two wins in the shot put and discus events. With the discus Greaves covered a distance of 18.33m in her peak throw to win ahead of Sherry Hewit, with 17.50m being her best throw.
In the shot put she reached 5.40m to repel teammate Tiffany Jeffrey who ended in second place with her 5.30m best throw. For Edghill her contribution came off a first place win in the girls’ under-14 high jump and a second place in the javelin event after her 14.04m best throw could not surpass teammate Onica Roses’ 15m throw.
Rose also registered first place takes in the shot put (5.45m) and discus (17.67m) events. Weeks took her wins in the girls’ under-16 discus, with a 17.18 best throw, and shot put, where she was a success at 6.40m Also adding significant points for Bishops’ was 2009 nationals discus and high jump athlete, Kimberly Arthur, and Jamal Basdeo, who won the boys’ under-14 discus and javelin events. Arthur recorded a win in the girls’ under-16 high jump.
Meanwhile in Zone One, Roberts added to maximum points for QC in the discus (20.62m) and shot put (8.80m) throws. Wiltshire flourished in the girls under-14 javelin (11.17) and discus (17.70m). In both events QC also took the second place positions with Deanna Softley, throwing 7.97m, coming in at second place in the javelin and Shani Williams who came in second in the discus off a 13m throw. Williams went on to win the shot put at 4.63m.
Atkinson in the smallest of categories won the boys’ under-12 javelin (11.04m) and high jump events.
