Local rifle shooters Mahendra Persaud and Ransford Goodluck finished just outside of the medals on the penultimate day of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India yesterday.
Persaud and Goodluck placed fifth in the pairs Fullbore Open Stage Three 1000-yard event after scoring 73 points with six V-bulls and 70 points with zero V-bulls respectively.
In the championship rounds Persaud finished with 291 points with 24 V-bulls while Goodluck had 288 points with 18 V-bulls.
Prior to the final stage Persaud shot 48 points with six v-bulls and Goodluck shot 49 points with four V-bulls in the 600-yard event at the CRPF Campus, Kadarpur. At the end of the competition the New Zealand pair of Mike Collins and John Snowden shot their way to the gold medal with a total of 71- 5 V-bulls and 72- 3 V-bulls respectively; they had overall totals of 295-29 V-bulls and 293-24 V-bulls.
In the silver medal position the Scottish pair of Angus Mc Leod and Ian Shaw notched up scores of 294-22 V-bulls and 293-24 V-bulls. Jon Underwood and Parag Patel of England rounded out the podium positions with scores of 292-25 V-bulls and 292-23 V-bulls respectively.
In the singles fullbore championships Goodluck finished 18th overall with 383-25 V-bulls.
The third stage in which he shot at the 900-yard and 1000-yard events he scored 69- 3V-bulls and 64- 1V-bull. Persaud on the other hand finished 23rd with a total of 377- 21 V-bulls; in the 900-yard he shot 68-2 V-bulls and in the 1000-yard he shot 63- 1 V-bull.
Guyana has only won one medal at the Games through Aliann Pompey, who took bronze in the women’s 400m with her season-best time of 51.65s.
