Officials of the Lusignan Golf Club have extended an invitation to golfers from neighbouring Suriname and French Guiana to compete in next month’s Guyana Open Championships. The invitation was extended by Club Captain Patrick Prashad who led a team of players to the recently held Suriname Open tournament in Paramaribo.
The Guyana Open will take place from November 21-22 at the Club in Lusignan and will also attract players from the United States, Canada and the European Union.
Meanwhile, Paramaribo golf course confounded many of the visiting Guyanese recently with its cement hard greens and tricky pin placements set for the RBTT Bank Invitational Tournament. The course played shorter than Lusignan with many opportunities for low scoring but punished errant approach shots and overly aggressive putting.
The overall winner was the caddy captain for the club Bert Lienga, who playing off a 15 handicap, shot a net 133.
Best performer for Guyana was late entrant Avinda Kishore (handicap 11) who came second over the two days with an excellent low net score of 135 (67, 68). Brother of Avinash, Avinda showed he has the same mental composure and the ability to play great golf outside of Guyana.
William Walker secured lowest gross on the first day shooting 76 (net 69) thanks to four birdies; however he lost his touch on the second
the first day while shooting net 150 over the two days.
Patrick Prashad played some solid if not stellar golf shooting 74 each day, while John Tracy stunned his colleagues and himself by shooting gross 38 on the front nine of the first day. He ended up with net 158.
Mike Gayadin shot net 162 for the two days. Mike Mangal who played well on the first day with a net 69 also faded on day two shooting 148. Doreen de Caires was just out of the prizes with 60 points in her Stableford group.
In the meantime, the Hanson Inc. and MACORP Medal Play tournaments will be played off today and tomorrow respectively.
