Girl grazed by bullet during high-speed police chase

Police on the West Demerara yesterday caught a man with a large quantity of marijuana following a high-speed chase during which shots were fired-one of which grazed a teenaged girl.

The incident occurred after mid-day. This newspaper was told that the chase began when police attempted to stop the mini-bus at Wales but it did not and instead sped away in a northern direction. The police pick-up followed, sirens blaring. The chase went on and the bus turned into the Bagotville road to get to Parfait Harmonie.

One resident of the community told this newspaper that she saw as the vehicles came into the scheme. “They were trying to catch up with the bus and they put on the siren to signal for them to stop but the bus wasn’t stopping”, the resident said. She said that the vehicles sped to another section of the scheme and she heard two gunshots. But that did not stop the mini-bus. “It went in speeding and it come out back speeding”, the resident said.

The police in the pick-up continued the chase and shortly after caught the bus. This newspaper was told that the girl was hit in one of her feet by the bullet.  A source said that she is 14 years old. She was taken to the hospital by police and treated and sent away. The driver of the mini-bus was taken into custody and police found a large quantity of suspected marijuana in the bus.
Investigations are continuing.
