Colin Jones, others get PI dates for attempted murder of cops, arson

Colin Jones, Randy Mars and Jafar Simpson were last week given dates for the commencement of the preliminary inquiries into charges levelled against them, including the attempted murder of three men and an arson attack at the High Court.

The three men, who appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, are charged with the attempted murders of Rajindra Singh, Clayton Westford and Damintra Indrapaul. Other charges for which they appeared were discharging a loaded firearm and setting fire to a building.

The case involving Singh and Indrapaul was adjourned to January 24 for the commencement of the PI, while the Westford case will begin on January 10, at Court Five.  As it relates to the charge of discharging a loaded firearm, for which Jones is accused, the PI is also set to commence on January 10, at Court Five.
The commencement of the PI into the charge of setting fire to building against the three is scheduled to begin on February 3.

Meanwhile, attorney George Thomas, who is representing Jones, made a new request for the man to be psychologically evaluated. An earlier request was denied after Jones repeatedly told the court that he was in a position to answer to the charges and was fully aware of what was required of him as he was not mentally incapacitated in any way.

Thomas also told the court that the three men have complained of being beaten and starved by police and he asked that the situation be examined in a timely manner to ensure that justice is served.

He said too that Mars, who sustained injuries at the hands of police, has not been allowed to access medical attention even though an order for same was made by Sewnarine-Beharry on December 2.

The magistrate subsequently ordered an investigation into the complaints raised by the attorney.

As it relates to the request for a psychological evaluated, she said she will give a decision when the men return to court on January 24.

It is alleged that Jones, Mars and Simpson, on November 4, 2009, at Georgetown, discharged loaded firearms at Westford, Police Constable Singh and Police Detective Indrapaul, with intent to murder them. On the same day, they are also accused of setting fire to the Supreme Court of Judicature.

Jones has also been charged with murdering two of his former gang members and another man and was jailed for eight years after he pleaded guilty to a series of other charges, including cultivation of ganja and possession of an unlicensed weapon and ammunition.
