Taxi driver accused of stealing passenger’s cash

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday placed a taxi driver on $125,000 bail, after he was charged with stealing over half a million dollars from a passenger.

Faizal Mohammed, of Tuschen Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, is alleged to have stolen $585,000, from Goupanand Singh.

The two men are known to each other, Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court, adding that Singh frequently uses Mohammed’s taxi. According to Telford, on January 7, Singh joined the car for a trip to National Hardware store. He left his money in the vehicle while conducting business at the store. After an hour, he left the store but Mohammed was gone. Singh, Telford said, decided to call Mohammed, who informed him that he was at Masjid. When Mohammed eventually returned, Singh discovered that the money was missing and the police were summoned. After a sum of $100,000 was recovered, Mohammed was arrested and charged.

Mohammed was placed on bail and ordered to appear on January 17 at Court Five for statements.
