Firstly, I thank Claude Raphael for his forthright views on the candidates for the upcoming elections as it is not often that people would publicly provide such candid views, particularly when he may be close ‘buddies’ with them all (‘Bissoondyal Singh is the best person to succeed Chetram Singh as President of the Guyana Cricket Board’ SN, January 10).
Definitely Mr Bish Panday has been an integral part of the Chetram Singh administration and has run his course, and should do the decent thing and stay ‘retired.’ I do believe that the other two candidates have also been tainted with the infighting at the board.
Editor, the Guyana Cricket Board is a critically important body in the governance of cricket, and while I am not advocating government interference, I do think the Ministry of Sport has a role to play given the disgraceful performance of this body and wrangling in its leadership which has brought the entire country into disgrace.
The government should withhold subventions and other support unless a candidate of proven capability, not in running a business but in knowledge of sport and its administration is elected.
Personally I would like to see someone who has played cricket at least at national level take over the reins; my choices at this moment would be Roger Harper or Clyde Butts. I do believe persons close to these gentlemen should persuade them to run for this office; I am sure they would bring the game and its administration back to the desired level.
