The TRIPS system is tripping up; goods are left on wharves for months

Dear Editor,

As a small businessman I am being slowly but surely put out of business as over the last two weeks in particular, the much vaunted customs TRIPS system has tripped out and tripped up so often I think they are beginning to make GPL look good. A very important piece of equipment has been sitting on the docks for nearly a month and the entry cannot be processed because of a litany of woes and bungling at this institution. I encourage you to send your reporters to Main Street and do an investigative piece on what is a major tragedy. Hundreds of millions of dollars of goods have been left on the wharves for months while their owners pull their hair out trying desperately to find an answer to this abominable situation.

Clearly the Minister of Finance and Mr Sattaur should apologize to the importing public in particular. This situation more than most definitely requires a commission of inquiry. I write this letter out of sheer frustration, and hope others would voice their concerns. The Chamber of Commerce and the Guyana Manufacturers Association are now led by persons who will not rock any boat, as I believe fear pervades and prevails these days.

I implore you to use your good offices to try to understand why this government and its anointed underlings cannot even run a customs department with some degree of efficiency.

Yours faithfully,
(Name and address provided)
