Two in hospital after Mabura trail collision

Two men were hospitalised yesterday following a collision along the Mabura trail.

The accident occurred around 12:30pm, when pick-up GMM 7227, driven by Orin Ally collided head-on with an approaching car PJJ 6249, driven by Allan Cottan, at a blind turn.

One of the five occupants of the pick-up said they had just left the gas station at 58 Miles Mabura and as they were nearing the blind turn Ally lost control of the vehicle, crossed lanes and collided with the approaching car. “The car was coming around a blind turn and both vehicles ended up down the gully,” the passenger said.

All five passengers of the pick-up escaped with minor bruises and scratches while both the driver and the lone passenger of the car were seriously injured.

Cottan and his passenger, who was not identified, were subsequently rushed for medical treatment. Cottan was referred to the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC), while his passenger—said to have sustained serious head injuries and internal bleeding—was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The passenger is believed to be a pork-knocker who had hitched a ride with Cottan.

According to a relative of Cottan, he left Georgetown yesterday morning to drop off parts for a business owned by another brother in the interior. “We just get a call saying he was in an accident and was at Linden, so we rush up here,” the woman said.

Cottan underwent surgery at the LHC and his relative said he had injuries to hands, legs and chest. “They (doctors) say his lung get damage so I don’t know but he is talking and ain’t look too bad again,” she added.
