10K race walk billed for National Park today

The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) will launch its 2011 race walk season with a 10K event around the National Park commencing at 06:30hrs this morning.

In a press release, newly-appointed coordinator Maria Nelson stated that the club’s Mashramani 2011 programme begins on February 6 with a Juniors Race Walk event starting at 06:30hrs outside the Soesdyke Primary School and ending at the Soesdyke Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) office.

The season will then heat up with the Forbes Burnham Anniversary Race Walk on February 13 from the Burnham Bust, Vlissengen Road and Public Road, Kitty, proceeding along Vlissengen Road and ending at the Place of the Seven Ponds in the Botanical Gardens.

The action continues on February 20 when the CSTC in association with the Green Path Foundation host the Melanie Mash 10K Race Walk around Melanie, East Coast Demerara (ECD) at 06:30 hours from the Old Complex.

The programme will conclude in Linden on February 27 with the Linden Mash Race Walk commencing at 06:30hrs at Amelia’s Ward Junction and finishing at Bayroc Recreational Centre, Wisroc.

Trophies, medals and other prizes will be awarded in different categories for seniors (male and female) juniors, veterans and the Differently-able, the release stated.

The new coordinator also said that an exciting year of race walking is planned with races scheduled in all 10 administrative regions.

Moreover, Guyana is expected to be represented in overseas competitions in the Caribbean and the USA. Nelson also plans to stage a number of international events in Guyana.

There will also be a special Easter Weekend ‘Land of Lakes’, Essequibo Coast Race Walk event which will start at Supenaam and end at the Xenon Hotel, Charity, Essequibo.
