‘Women as Agents of Change’ theme for Commonwealth Day

The Guyana Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) will be holding three days of activities to observe Commonwealth Day under the theme ‘Women as Agents of Change’ a press release from Parliament Office said.

The first activity will be a tour of the Parliament Chambers for secondary school students who will be participating in a panel discussion on the Importance of Parliament and the work of the CPA; and will conclude with a reception and exhibition highlighting its history.

On March 17 a debating competition will be hosted in the Parliament Chamber on the topic: “Over the past decade a number of countries, including Guyana, have amended their laws to ensure that women represent one third of the Members in Parliament. Has this quota system benefited women in Guyana and other Commonwealth countries?” According to the release, the final day of activities will be held at the University of Guyana in an effort to reach a wider group of stakeholders. This session will take the form of a round table discussion on the topic: “Women as Agents of Change – Overcoming obstacles to achieve greater gender equality and development”. This discussion will be moderated by a member of the University’s staff and the presenters will include representatives of civil society and Members of Parliament.
