Bus conductor remanded over robbery under arms

A minibus conductor was yesterday remanded to prison by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a charge of robbery under arms.  He also faces investigation on an allegation of rape.

It is alleged that on October 30, 2010, at Georgetown, John Sampson who was armed with a knife robbed a woman of a cellular phone, one DVD player, $20,000 worth of Avon products, and US$3,000, all to the value of  $670,000.

The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

According to the facts as presented by the prosecutor, Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, on the day in question the Virtual Complainant (VC) was at home attending to her grandfather when she heard a noise. Upon checking she was confronted by three men  who forced her back into the bedroom. They allegedly also proceeded to rape her. No charge has yet been brought in this matter.

The court was told that the men then tied the VC with a cord and left. The VC subsequently untied herself and made checks around the house when she discovered the items missing. A report was made to the police who conducted investigations and subsequently the defendant was held and reportedly identified by the VC. He was later charged.

The defendant was also refused bail on account of the ongoing rape investigation. The matter was  adjourned to February 17 for reports.
